This conception of a sum-total of reality is the conception of a thing in itself

This conception of a sum-total of reality is the conception of a thing in itself, regarded as completely determined; and the conception of an ens realissimum is the conception of an individual being, inasmuch as it is determined by that predicate of all possible contradictory predicates, which indicates and belongs to being. It is, therefore, a transcendental ideal which forms the basis of the complete determination of everything that exists, and is the highest material condition of its possibility- a condition on which must rest the cogitation of all objects with respect to their content.

Friendship is unnecessary

Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art - it has no survival value; rather its one of those things that give value to survival.

What torments mankind

What torments mankind is not the things, but the opinions [teachings] that are held about the things. -- _Enchiridion_ ('Handbook') of Epictetus, Book 10

You are where you are

You are where you are, you are what you are because of what's gone into your mind. You can change where you are, you can change what you are by changing what goes into your mind.
-- Zig Ziglar

They fuck you up, your mum and dad

They fuck you up, your mum and dad, They may not mean to, but they do. They fill you with the faults they had And add some extra, just for you. -- _High Windows_ (1974) 'This Be The Verse'

If you can keep your head when all about you

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream -- and not make dreams your master;
If you can think -- and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

Only in quiet waters do things mirror themselves undistorted.

Only in quiet waters do things mirror themselves undistorted.
Only in a quiet mind is adequate perception of the world.
-- Hans Margolius

If I am not for myself, who is for me?

If I am not for myself, who is for me?
And if I am only for myself, what am I?
If not now, when?
-- Rabbi Hillel, in the_Talmud_

Your children are not your children.

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's
longing for itself...
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
for their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
-- Kahlil Gilbran,_The Prophet_

You see things; and say "Why?"

You see things; and say "Why?" But I dream things that never were; and I say "Why not?" -- George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) Anglo-Irish playwright, critic
